St. Mary School Community Service Program

"More than any other program of education sponsored by the Church, the Catholic school has the opportunity and obligation to be unique, contemporary, and oriented to Christian service...oriented to Christian service because it helps students acquire skills, virtues, and habits of heart required for effective service to others." (To Teach as Jesus Did, USCCB, 1972, #106)

Mrs. Stacy Huddleston and Mrs. Cecile Mantecon, Moderators

SERVICE FORM (download)

The community service program at St. Mary School seeks to provide students in grades 6 to 8 the opportunity to serve the greater community through volunteer events and experiences. The school’s Student Learning Expectations challenges each student to be A Person of Faith, An Active Learner, and a Responsible Citizen. A student who performs acts of service is one who meets and exceeds these expectations.

Students are lovingly encouraged to complete 25 hours of community service between grades 6 to 8. Ten of these hours must be served in a program outside of St. Mary School.

As students earn their community service hours, they must keep record of their hours on a St. Mary Service Form. These forms may be downloaded online at the link that appears above and returned to Mrs. Mantecon before each quarterly due date (see below). Each completed form (with at least 25 hours) must be accompanied by a written reflection that addresses the following:

Describe one of your service learning opportunities. What surprised you about this experience? Did this experience lead to a transformation (change in perspective, or call to action) and if so, why?

Those who complete their hours will be presented with a Service Block Award during one of the quarterly awards assemblies and will have the distinction of wearing a red cord over their graduation gown for their Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation Ceremony.

Approved agencies appear as follows. If the agency that the student would like to serve at is not mentioned, please obtain the approval of the moderators in order to get proper credit PRIOR TO SERVICE being performed. This information and upcoming events will be posted on the website: http://stmarygilroy.org by clicking on the link in each of the class pages for grades 6, 7, and 8 and will appear in the Wednesday bulletin.

QUARTERLY DUE DATES 2010-2011 (one week prior to the each Awards Assembly):

Oct. 29, Jan. 19, April 6, May 25 (for 8th graders), June 3
